About the event
Our students have been studying Tennessee History this year, so we had to make a visit to the amazing Tennessee State Museum. We will break into two groups - K-5 and 6-12 for this. Their educators will lead us on a guided tour of some of the museum. You will also have time to explore more of the museum on your own. We will walk over to the Farmers Market next door for lunch and then head to the TN State Capitol after lunch for a guided tour there.
For Grades K-5th: Tennessee Longhunter (Costumed Program)
Some of the earliest explorers to make their way over the mountains and into the area that would become Tennessee were known as longhunters. In this program, your students will discover why these men came into this area, how they survived in the wilderness, and what was their relationship with the Southeastern tribal nations already here.
For Grades 6-12th: The Civil War in Tennessee
The Civil War is one of the defining events in Tennessee history. What was it like for the average Tennessean? We will explore the debate over secession, major battles, soldiers’ lives, and the cost of war on individuals. Highlights include: John Brown pike, 12lb. Napoleon cannon, a recreation of a soldier's tent, a soldier’s prosthetic leg
State Capitol Tour
On a guided tour of the Tennessee State Capitol, you will join an educator on a 45-minute long guided tour. The tour will cover the history of the state of Tennessee, state and local government, and interesting stories of the building itself.
