About the event
THIS EVENT IS DESIGNED FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. STUDENTS MUST BE 12 OR OLDER TO ATTEND.
We are collecting canned goods all throughout the month of November for Second Harvest, a food pantry in Nashville. In addition, our students and families will have a chance to give back by volunteering there. They need volunteers every day of the year to sort and pack food. This is a very hands on activity and does involve some lifting. The students will be given age appropriate tasks and will be busy the whole time. It is hard work but also really fun. Our students who went last year had a blast.
By sorting food for different programs and distribution sites, you help provide millions of meals each month to our neighbors facing hunger in Middle and West Tennessee. Projects vary and may include:
- Evaluating, sorting, and packing non-perishable food donations.
- Evaluating, sorting, and packing frozen or perishable food in our 40-degree cooler.
- Bagging bulk produce into family-sized portions in our 50-degree cooler.
- Packing food bags for children or food boxes for senior citizens.
Second Harvest’s mission is to provide food to people facing hunger and work to advance hunger solutions. Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is one of the largest and most comprehensive of more than 200 food banks and food distribution centers nationwide. During FY23, Second Harvest distributed more than 42 million pounds of food to nearly 420 Partner Agencies, providing more than 38 million meals to children, families, and seniors facing hunger throughout our 46-county service area.
Volunteer spots are LIMITED. Please only register to come if you can commit to be there.
